Introduction
Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries are a type of rechargeable lead-acid battery. These batteries are equipped with a safety valve that allows the escape of gas if internal pressure builds up. They are sealed batteries and, therefore, maintenance-free, in contrast to flooded batteries that require regular water addition.
VRLA Battery Technology
VRLA batteries utilize two main technologies - Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Gel cells. Both types are designed to recombine gases internally to minimize water loss and maintenance.
AGM vs Gel
AGM batteries use a fine fiberglass mat to absorb the electrolyte. They typically have higher power output, support higher rates of discharge, and recharge faster. Gel batteries use a silica-type gel to hold the electrolyte, offering better performance in deep discharge applications. While AGM batteries operate efficiently at high current output, Gel batteries are more suitable in temperature-sensitive environments.
Applications of VRLA Batteries
VRLA batteries are widely used in applications such as uninterrupted power supplies (UPS), telecommunications, and emergency lighting. They are also commonly found in renewable energy systems due to their reliability and low maintenance needs.
Specifications and Performance
The nominal voltage of VRLA batteries is typically 2V per cell. Common VRLA configurations include 6V and 12V units. These batteries can maintain a consistent voltage and current output, making them ideal for standby applications. Their typical cycle life ranges from 200 to 1500 charge/discharge cycles depending on the depth of discharge and operating conditions.
